Jersey Day – Thursday, January 23, 2025
Students and staff are encouraged to wear a jersey on Thursday, January 23. They can either wear a jersey or uniform of their own extra-curricular activity/sport or one of a local and/or professional sports team. Should be fun!
Author visit
On Wednesday, we were fortunate to welcome best-selling author and storyteller Christy Jordan-Fenton. With the blessing of her late Inuvialuk mother and best friend, Olemaun Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, who attended an Arctic residential school in the 1940s, Christy shared stories highlighting the strength and courage of Indigenous children who were forced to be their own heroes. Christy is well-versed in trauma-informed, decolonizing and strengths-based approaches to exploring residential school history, and was able to adapt presentations to be appropriate to each grade-level throughout the day. To see photos and short clips from her presentations, visit our Instagram page @WestgateCBE.
Carnaval
On Thursday, February 6 from 4:30-6:30 pm all Westgate families are invited to attend the special outdoor celebration Carnaval de Westgate. This event is completely outdoors (except for limited access to indoor washrooms). This Westgate Parents' Society sponsored event is free for everyone to attend. Students and teachers will be engaging in activities celebrating culture and all things winter throughout the week; to wrap up this fun filled week, Carnaval de Westgate will feature outdoor games, snow shoeing, hot chocolate, food trucks, a crepe station, festive music as well as ice skating on our community rink - all weather permitting of course! Alongside the hot chocolate, water bottles will be available.
Grab your mitts and toques and join us for an evening of fun and community building!!
