Remembrance Day

Due to the timing of our upcoming Fall Break, we will have a minute of silence on Wednesday, November 8th. Then, on November 16, we will have a short whole school assembly to honor Remembrance Day.

School Conferences

We look forward to welcoming families to the school for our first session of in-person School Conferences on November 23 from 3:00 to 7:00pm and on November 24 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. The conference system will be open for bookings through your MyCBE account, on Thursday, November 16 at 6:00am. We would like to encourage parents to come in person but if you are unable to attend in person, please email your child’s teacher to organize a virtual meeting by the end of the day, November 15. Conferences will be 15 minutes in duration and you are welcome to bring your child to be part of the conversation with the teacher.

Clubs

As a staff we have decided to offer clubs only to students in Grades 4 to 6 for the 2023-2024 school year. We discussed this at our last School Council meeting on October 26. Firstly, this will allow more teachers to work together to facilitate clubs. Secondly, we believe it is very important for our Div I students to be active and learn to play cooperatively outside, to manage conflict and build healthy relationships. Guidance will continue to be provided by classroom teachers in terms of these goals.

On Thursday, November 2 all students in Grades 4 to 6 attended our virtual presentation on this year’s clubs at Westgate. Students will be permitted to choose one or two clubs with their classroom teacher next week. We encourage you to have conversations with your child(ren) at home about their choices and ensure they are interested and committed to attending for the duration of the club. Club participation is not mandatory and those students who enjoy being outside with their friends are encouraged to do so. You can find a list of clubs with short descriptions on this page of our school website. If you have any questions, please reach out to an administrator or the teacher sponsors of the clubs.

Family Cultural Evening

We are hoping to organize a cultural sharing event in the main gym on November 23 from 5:30-7:00pm, the same evening as our School Conferences. The idea would be for families to be able to share aspects of their culture and religion with members of the school community. If you are interested in helping to plan and manage this event, please contact Madame Julie (jamuhlberger@cbe.ab.ca). Based on the interest from families, a final decision on this event will be communicated to parents prior to the conferences.

Dates of Significance – CBE

The Calgary Board of Education is looking forward to recognizing many significant dates this November! Please feel free to reach out to the school or your child’s teacher to share how your family recognizes any of these important dates.

The Diversity Committee is looking for a few parent volunteers to help once a month with our bulletin board display of cultural dates of significance in the school. If you are interested, please email jmarmand@cbe.ab.ca.

Casino Fundraiser - URGENT

We are still in desperate need of volunteers for our upcoming casino dates on Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12 at Cowboy’s Casino. No knowledge of gambling or previous experience is necessary and there is a casino advisor on site for all shifts to provide training and support. One casino shift generates a significant financial return on your time. Plus, the PERKS include parking and a free meal. The following positions are still vacant:

Saturday, November 11

7:00PM - 3:30AM, General Manager, 1 volunteer required

7:00PM - 3:30AM, ON CALL night shift, 2 volunteers required

11:15PM - 3:30AM, Count Room Supervisor, 1 volunteer required

Sunday, November 12

11:00AM - 7:30PM, ON CALL day shift, 1 volunteer required

7:00PM - 3:30AM, General Manager, 1 volunteer required

7:00PM - 3:30AM, ON CALL night shift, 2 volunteers required

If you would like to sign up for one of these positions, please email Marnie at westgateschoolcasino@gmail.com as the sign up sheet is now locked. Be sure to include your full name, desired shift, email address and the best number to contact you on your scheduled day.
Thank you for your continued support of our society’s greatest fundraiser!

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is extremely full of lost items. Please remind your child to check for their lost items. The lost and found will be on display at the front entrance during Student Learning Conferences. If you wish to come to the school to see if any of your child(ren)’s items are in the lost and found, please enter through the main entrance and check in at the office first.
